The benefits of homeschooling vary for each family; however, there are several things we all have in common. Many of these commonalities branch from the liberty to educate as we see fit to the flexibility of accommodating unique lifestyles. If you’re looking for all that homeschooling has to offer, keep reading for the top 5 benefits of educating your children at home.
Benefits of Homeschooling (Beyond the Academics)
Although academics are a major part of education, there are other areas that families can experience homeschooling benefits. Yes, the academic benefits range from customized learning opportunities to focusing on fostering life skills. However, let’s not ignore the flexibility, gap-filling, resourceful, holistic, and accommodating perks that this journey can provide.
1) Discovering flexibility
Academics typically take on a whole new meaning for homeschoolers. Most families begin their journey with a hardcore focus on meeting many milestones set in place by public institutions, and rightfully so. Even then, it’s only a matter of time before parents begin to see the benefits of flexibility that homeschooling brings.
Many of these adjustments include the ability to meet children where they are, whether the child is ahead, behind, challenging, or active. If your child has had any exposure to the public or private school system, imagine the relief that comes with not having to teach or learn for the test. Even in states where some testing is required, it is still not as rigorous as the state tests implemented for public schooled students.
2) Meeting unique needs
In some cases, children may have unique needs in the physical, emotional, mental, and/or behavioral areas that require special attention. Homeschooling provides parents with the opportunity to meet their children’s needs sooner than later. Most of this is doable because of the low “teacher-student” ratio. Instead of being in a classroom of twenty-plus students, children are able to experience a more one-on-one experience with their parents.
It becomes less of a hindrance and more beneficial for children who need extra time to strengthen areas of skill that may be lagging. This is the homeschoolers idea of an IEP – an Individualized Education Plan.
3) Accessing increased resources
If there’s one significant change the homeschooling community has seen over time, it’s in the amount of resources available today. Just a few short decades ago, the dominant resources included public library books and selections from a minimal amount of curriculum companies.
Fast forward to our technologically advanced era and you can now access curriculum and resources from hundreds (if not thousands) of companies and small businesses. These resources can also be accessed in person or online. One of the best perks about this increase in resources is the number of them created by homeschool moms (and dads) for homeschool families (like the Online Unit Studies I create).
Communities have also begun to embrace homeschoolers by offering opportunities for community service, activities, internships, and entrepreneurship. Homeschoolers are also able to take advantage of attending college much sooner.
4) Embracing a holistic education
Although it's considered a new movement, offering children a holistic education has always been at the core of home education. This method embraces the goal of engaging all aspects of learning, leaving the depth of what’s taught up to the parents. Many families find that some of the best learning takes place at unique times. This can be during field trips, play dates, nature walks, or even cooking with mom.
5) Accommodating your lifestyle
Some families are homebodies, have a parent in the military, or have a member with an illness. There are other families who have an interest in being part of a local CO-OP group, going on a lot of field trips, or travel (also known as a roadschooling). No matter your lifestyle, another benefit of homeschooling is its ability to accommodate your lifestyle.
Overall, the benefits of homeschooling are almost endless. Each family is unique and their experiences will be as well. Even with all that is mentioned above, it should be noted that homeschooling may not be for every family, and that’s okay. The journey is a process, and the process is a journey. If you choose this walk for your family, remember to embrace it and homeschool your way!
