  • Your family needs more money (that’s pretty straightforward, right?)

10 Business Ideas for Homeschool Moms (and Dads)

Freelancing

One of my first tips whenever someone asks how to make money online is to think about what you enjoy doing that you’re good at — and that other people may be willing to pay you for.

And don’t make the mistake of thinking of just things you’ve already done for income. Get creative!

Are you a good writer? Do people compliment you on the pictures you take? Are you pretty good at drawing or painting? Do techy things like setting up websites or editing videos come easily to you? Has anyone ever told you you have a great speaking voice? Can you type quickly and accurately?

There are so many opportunities to monetize skills you already have as a freelancer. Here are just a few freelance careers to consider:

  • Content or copywriter
  • Artist
  • Photographer
  • Web designer
  • Graphic Designer
  • Video Editor
  • Voiceover Actor
  • Social Media Manager
  • Transcriptionist

You can get even more ideas by browsing Fiverr, the freelance services marketplace. It’s also a great place to list your services when you’re getting started!

Virtual Assistance

If you’re really organized, know how to follow directions well, have a keen eye for detail, and love being able to help make other people’s lives easier, you might be cut out to be a Virtual Assistant (VA for short).

Virtual Assistants are a really big deal in the online business world — especially for solopreneurs and entrepreneurs looking to build a rockstar team to help support their day-to-day business goals.

They’re like the “Girl Friday” who helps entrepreneurs by handling the critical behind-the-scenes stuff that has to be done . . . freeing them up to focus on other things. Things like:

  • Email management
  • Project management
  • Schedule management
  • Administrative tasks
  • Blogging/social media tasks

One fantastic resource for info on how to become a Virtual Assistant is The VA Handbook

Creating and Selling Digital Products

If you want to be able to create passive income (in other words, create something once and make money from it over time), digital products are a great option! In fact, since you’re a homeschooler, one logical place to start is selling homeschool/educational resources like printables and unit studies.

However, you don’t have to limit yourself to just homeschool digital products. Other ideas for digital products to sell include:

  • Planners
  • Ebooks
  • Printable stickers
  • Journals
  • Coloring sheets
  • Printable games
  • Checklists
  • Stock images

Some great places to list digital products to sell include Teachers Pay Teachers (which is my favorite) and Etsy.

Don’t feel very creative? You can always hire someone upfront to create the product for you and then you take over selling it! Just be sure to include verbiage in your contract that makes it clear anything you pay them to create is yours to do with as you wish.

Create an Online Course

Speaking of digital products, another great option is creating an online course to share some of the knowledge you have. As a homeschooler, you can go the education route — especially if there’s a particular subject you love teaching.

But remember that you have a whole lifetime of experiences (and interests) to pull from, so get creative! There’s a literal world full of topics you could cover. I highly recommend you check out the courses people are offering on Outschool for inspiration!

Tutoring

If creating an online course isn’t quite up your alley, but you do enjoy the idea of teaching a subject you enjoy, you could look into becoming an online tutor. There are multiple websites that help connect tutors to learners (Tutors.com comes to mind immediately). But you could also offer your services in your local community, on social media, or on your own website.

With video chat software such as Zoom and Google Meet, it’s easier than ever to tutor people from all over the world.

Sell Your Crafts

Are you pretty artistic or good with your hands? If so, why not turn your crafts into cash?

There are people all over the world making great money by sewing, crocheting, knitting, drawing, painting, woodworking, glassblowing, and so much more!

While Etsy is definitely one of the most popular places to sell your crafts online, don’t forget about places like Amazon Handmade, Shopify,  your own website, Facebook Marketplace, and even local events (like the Farmer’s Market or other vendor-friendly venues).

Social Media Digital Creator

These days, it’s easier than ever to create an audience online . . . and all of the major platforms have ways for you to monetize your online engagement. And you can do it just by creating content centered around your interests or your life.

Here are some official guides on how to make money via the top social media platforms:

Reselling Products Online

If you’re good at spotting great deals, reselling products online might be a great fit for you! You could turn shopping trips to places like Goodwill, flea markets, yard/garage sales, and consignment shops into investment trips. These are all places to find cool products at bottom-of-the-barrel prices that you can then sell online for a profit.

Here’s a quick WikiHow article on 3 Simple Ways to Become a reseller that may shed more light on this income opportunity.

Delivery Gigs

Another really flexible way to make money as a homeschool parent is through some of the top delivery apps such as UberEats, DoorDash, Shipt, InstaCart, GrubHub, and Postmates.

As far as I know, each of these allows their drivers to choose when they work and which deliveries they want to take. So you have the freedom to pick up as many or as few gigs as you want. And I know people who work for multiple companies, which makes it that much easier for you to earn additional income in your free time.

Blogging (sell products, affiliate marketing, advertising brand ambassadorships, etc)

Of course, I can’t end an article about how homeschool moms make money online without mentioning blogging. Not only can blogging be a great creative outlet, it can also become a really solid source of additional income. Some people are even able to earn a full-time income with their blogs. Between sponsored posts, advertising, promoting other people’s products (aka affiliate marketing), selling your own products, and brand ambassadorships, there are quite a few ways to monetize a blog. In fact, Forbes shares 25 Ways to Make Money From Your Blog that’s worth checking out!

Honorable Mention

As a bonus, here are some additional ways to make money as a homeschool mom that you may consider looking into:

Childcare
Dog Sitting
House Sitting
Plant Sitting (it’s a thing!)
Selling your used homeschool curriculum

Remember, these business ideas can generate as much or as little money as you want . . . it’s all about the time, effort, and strategy you put into them! Have fun and good luck!
