Beginner “A” Spanish curriculum from Breaking the Barrier, and wanted to share my first impressions—because if you’re searching for a flexible, tech-savvy foreign language option that actually prepares your kids for the future, you’ll want to take a closer look at this one!

Finding a foreign language curriculum that’s rigorous, well-structured, flexible, and homeschool-friendly isn't easy. Many programs are designed for classrooms, leaving homeschool parents to figure out how to adapt them.
What caught my attention about Breaking the Barrier is that it was created by a seasoned language teacher with over 40 years of experience—and thoughtfully adapted for homeschool families.

One of my favorite things about Breaking the Barrier is how comprehensive the homeschool bundle is. You’re not left guessing or searching for extra pieces to make it work at home.

Suggested Pacing 🗓️
The curriculum is designed to be flexible, but the suggested pacing guide is a HUGE help. If you follow the four-days-per-week schedule (totally do-able), each lesson takes about a month to complete.
There are 8 Lessons total in ¡Vamos! Beginner “A”, so your student could complete this course in about 32 weeks (roughly one school year).
Vocabulary quizzes are usually taken around the third or fourth week of a lesson, and each lesson wraps up with a test. The pacing guide also points you to warm-up activities and extra practice resources you can find on their website to help students review key concepts.
What About French?
While my review focuses on the Spanish program, Breaking the Barrier also offers a complete French curriculum that follows the same well-structured and homeschool-friendly approach. The French series includes three levels—Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced—designed to take students from foundational skills all the way to fluency.
Just like the Spanish program, the French curriculum blends grammar instruction, vocabulary development, cultural context, and real-world language use. Students learn through print textbooks and interactive online tools, including native-speaker audio, digital flashcards, and self-paced exercises. The French Homeschool Package also includes a pacing guide, vocabulary quizzes, and a full test program—everything needed for a complete, credit-worthy language course at home.

What You’ll Learn in ¡Vamos! and ¡En Camino! 🧠
The ¡Vamos! and ¡En camino! levels of Breaking the Barrier are designed to introduce students to core Spanish grammar concepts and practical communication skills while immersing them in the rich diversity of Spanish-speaking cultures.
In ¡Vamos! (Beginner A), students will learn:
- Present and preterite verb tenses
- Subject and object pronouns
- Adjectives and agreement
- The verbs ser and estar
- Prepositions and conjunctions
In ¡En camino! (Beginner B), students build on that foundation with:
- The imperfect and progressive tenses
- The verbs saber and conocer
- Comparisons and formal commands
- Adverbs, por vs. para, and the immediate future tense
Starting with chapter three in ¡Vamos!, there is also a focus on a different Spanish-speaking country, offering up-to-date cultural insights into places like Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and Peru , and expanding to countries such as Venezuela, Chile, Cuba, and Costa Rica in ¡En camino! (the second-year program).
Through the online access portion, students are also exposed to different Spanish-speaking accents from native speakers. ¡En camino! goes even deeper with immersive articles, cultural videos, and literary selections—all designed to help students connect grammar and vocabulary with real-world language and culture.
Lesson Structure at a Glance 📖
Before diving into the full lessons and grammar rules, students begin ¡Vamos! with a special introduction called the STEPS Section—ten mini-lessons that cover essential, everyday vocabulary and phrases. These include greetings, family members, telling time, numbers, weather, days of the week, and common vocabulary for home and school.
My daughter really enjoyed this part of the program! The phrases were practical and immediately useful, which made her feel confident and excited to keep learning.
Each “step” had a new common question to learn (for example, how to ask someone's name, or how they are doing), and students are also given example answers to learn. They can then practice using the new words and phrases in the book, or on the online portal.
I like that students have the option to use EITHER the book or the online access (which I'll share more about in a minute!). You do have answer keys provided so you can check their work.
Cultural Information 🌍
Each lesson (after the first 2) includes cultural content that brings the language to life. Students explore maps, flags, foods, famous people, music, and places from Spanish-speaking countries.
Cultural readings and images are woven throughout the lessons—not just as sidebars, but as meaningful, connected content.
I think this makes learning the language more engaging and helps students appreciate the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
As you can see from some of the pictures below, for the cultural section, all the information is in Spanish—complete immersion here! While this might feel a little intimidating at first, I think it's a great opportunity for kids to practice reading the Spanish words out loud, work on their pronunciation, and try to figure it out based on the words they DO know.
New Vocabulary 📃
After the cultural information, each lesson begins with new vocabulary. There are a lot of new words to learn each lesson, and they always include nouns, adjectives, and verbs, along with miscellaneous words and a specific type of noun (like people, transportation, body parts, food & drink, sports, and more).
There is a QR code students can use that will take them directly to the online access portion where they can hear the new vocabulary words spoken by native speakers—love this “techie” integration!
A new grammar concept is taught in each lesson, so they have a few weeks to really work on those specific grammar skills.
For example, in lesson 3, students are taught:
They're given examples, exercises to practice, and even review from previous lessons so they can keep their skills sharp!
There are even opportunities for oral practice; students are encouraged to work with a partner to practice speaking the language (audio answers are available in the online access).
While I do think that this curriculum is best for learning to read and write the language, I do appreciate the oral exercises they include. However, I do think that more opportunities for students to engage in conversational Spanish will be necessary if they want to become really comfortable speaking and holding a conversation. But this is a great start!
Here's a peek at the vocabulary quizzes and an example of one of the included tests. These are worked into the schedule and will give you a good idea as to what your child is retaining from the lessons.
Tech-Friendly Features Homeschool Moms Will Love 💻
Even though Breaking the Barrier includes a beautiful printed textbook, the digital features I've alluded to are what really take this foreign language curriculum to the next level—especially for tech-savvy homeschool families!
The online platform includes:
- Audio recordings by native speakers, helping students develop an authentic accent
- Interactive exercises and quizzes with instant feedback
- Digital flashcards for quick and effective vocabulary review
- Cultural videos and articles to deepen understanding
- Self-paced tools that let students move forward confidently
Essentially, the online pages follow the textbook almost identically. So as you read through the textbook and follow along online, you can click to hear native speakers read the language and have a great opportunity to understand and practice pronunciation.
However, the online access DOES have additional cultural videos and articles NOT present in the textbook…so don't miss these!
Immediate Feedback to Lesson Questions ❓
If your child opts to answer the lesson questions online (rather than in the textbook), there are spaces they can type them in. They would then click on a lightbulb to get a suggested answer (for questions with multiple answers possible). I love the idea of maybe answering the questions online, and then using the book to go back for extra practice later.
Some questions have definite write or wrong answers. The program will grade these and give immediate feedback.
I also love all of the different TYPES of questions students have; they're not all “fill in the blank”. They get practice finding errors and correcting them (which is great because they'll see these types of questions on the quizzes and tests).
Speaking Practice + Mastering Vocabulary 🗣️
I mentioned that students may need a bit more speaking and conversation practice while working through this curriculum. Breaking the Barrier has a plan for this!
Coming soon, they’re adding AI-powered feedback for open-ended questions and a new scenario-based conversation tool. These will give students much more personalized speaking practice—like describing the weather or ordering in a restaurant—using the grammar they’re learning in context.
Integrated into each lesson are pre-made online flashcards they can use to practice new vocabulary, and extra opportunities for practice ONLY in the online access.
All of this is designed to make language learning more effective, engaging, and practical without requiring extra effort from the parent. That’s a win in my book!
How It Supports Independent Learning 💡
One of my favorite things about Breaking the Barrier is how well it supports independent learning. As a homeschool mom, I’m often balancing multiple grade levels and subjects throughout the day. It’s a huge help when a curriculum allows one of my kids to work on their own without constant guidance—and this program makes that possible.
The textbook is written in a straightforward, step-by-step style, so students can follow along without confusion. And the online platform adds another layer of support with all of the interactive exercises, vocabulary flashcards, and immediate feedback on many of the activities. That means your student can check their own work, try again if needed, and keep moving forward at their own pace.
