Easy Ecosystems Lessons for Homeschool with Online Unit Studies

Having ecosystems lessons as part of your homeschool science curriculum is important, because it helps our kids understand the planet we live on. There are different types of ecosystems such as terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, each made up of living and non-living things that depend on each other to survive.
In this mini Online Unit Study, your kids will learn about terrestrial, aquatic, mixed, and artificial ecosystems, which are the most common types. Within each of those, there are even more types…for example, within the terrestrial ecosystem, you’ll find forests, grasslands, tundras, and deserts.
Will ecosystems lessons be a part of your homeschool curriculum this year? For your upper elementary and middle school-aged kids, this mini Online Unit Study will be a great introduction to this topic.
Ecosystems Lessons & Unit Study Contents
This is a mini unit study that includes one module, with five different lessons. The lessons include:
- What are ecosystems?
- Terrestrial ecosystems
- Aquatic ecosystems
- Mixed ecosystems
- Artificial ecosystems
Within these lessons, your kids will get an overview of the characteristics of each of these ecosystems as they watch online videos, record information in an interactive notebook on Google Slides, and complete a couple of hands-on experiments.
For the Interactive Notebook component, your kids will need access to a Google Account. If you need help setting one up, you can view instructions here. Their Google Drive account will be a great place to story any online artifacts or techie projects they complete for their homeschool portfolio, so it's a great idea to set one up if you haven't already.
The Google Slides notebook will assist your student in taking guided notes during the online unit study to collect and organizing their information. This will be a great document of their learning once they complete this unit study!
Hands-on Ecosystems Experiments
I like to try to include an online project in most of my unit studies, so kids can practice using some of the online tools and programs available to them.
In this unit study, students will create a Venn Diagram using Canva to compare natural and artificial ecosystems. They will add their graphic to their Google Slides notebook when completed.
There are also two optional hands-on experiments they are given in this unit study: creating both aquatic and wetlands ecosystems in a bottle.

The unit study will most likely take about a week to complete in your homeschool if you have your student work on one lesson each day.
Students can work through the lessons independently if they are comfortable using and navigating the internet; for younger students, you may choose to sit with them to complete the unit study.
