Let’s be real—homeschooling is a beautiful, messy, joy-filled journey. But it also comes with a mountain of responsibilities: planning lessons, keeping track of assignments, teaching multiple ages, feeding people (constantly!), and TRYING to carve out five minutes of peace.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re spinning plates while trying to educate your kids, you’re not alone.
The good news? Technology can actually help instead of hinder—if you use it wisely. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite tech hacks for homeschool moms that have helped me (and other techie homeschool parents!) stay sane and save loads of time.

Best Tech Hacks for Homeschool Moms
These aren’t pie-in-the-sky ideas—these are practical, mom-tested tips to help your homeschool days run more smoothly.
Let's dive in!
1. Organize Your Homeschool with a Digital Planner
Paper planners are great…until you need to reschedule the entire lesson plan you already wrote out, your toddler colors on the pages, or you forget where you wrote that one important reminder. That’s where digital planning tools can be a game changer.
My absolute favorite digital homeschool planner is Homeschool Planet, but there are a lot of other tools I’ve seen homeschool moms swear by—like Trello for flexible drag-and-drop planning, Notion for building a fully customizable homeschool hub, and even Google Sheets for simple, color-coded lesson tracking. It really comes down to what works best for your brain and your season of life.
📝 Bonus hack: Create a shared Google Calendar just for homeschool events. Use color-coded categories for lessons, co-op, library visits, or testing deadlines. Not only does this help you stay organized, but it also lets older kids start taking responsibility for managing their own schedules. Win-win!
2. Automate Attendance and Record Keeping
Record keeping can sneak up on you—especially if you're in a state that requires regular reporting. Instead of scrambling to remember what you covered in March, set up a system that either keeps track of everything for you automatically or at least makes it super easy to stay on top of things without extra effort.
I've gotta brag on Homeschool Planet again for really shining here; this is what I use to automate our attendance and homeschool hours tracking (which is one of our state requirements). Once you set up your schedule and subjects, it will automatically log completed assignments and marks attendance and hours based on your settings….which means you don’t have to manually track hours or attendance each day—it does that for you in the background. Plus, it stores everything neatly, so when it’s time to submit records, you can generate reports with just a few clicks.
Other homeschool records can also be streamlined using digital tools. For example, you can set up a Google Form for your kids to fill out at the end of the day with what they worked on or read. Each entry then automatically feeds into a spreadsheet, creating a dated log without you having to write anything down. You could do the same thing with reading logs using tools like Bookly, which tracks time spent reading, pages read, and even reading streaks across devices.
And for grades, many digital planners and online learning platforms will calculate averages for you as soon as you enter assignment scores—no calculator needed.
While these tools don’t always handle everything 100% on their own, setting them up once can dramatically reduce the daily mental load. A little upfront work means fewer hours spent sorting through paperwork later—and more time focusing on what really matters in your homeschool.
3. Use Voice Assistants to Stay on Track
“Alexa, start a 30-minute timer for math.”
“Hey Google, remind me to order more printer ink.”
“Siri, add glue sticks to my Target list.”
Voice assistants like the Amazon Echo Pop are like digital mom helpers! If you’re juggling a baby on your hip while trying to explain long division, just speak your thoughts out loud—and let your smart speaker or phone remember it for you.
Ideas for homeschool moms:
- Set recurring subject reminders (like “Time for science!” at 11:00 a.m.)
- Create shopping lists or supply lists hands-free
- Use timers to keep everyone on task without you being the clock-watcher
You can even let kids use it to ask questions or spell difficult words during independent work time (we've used ours a lot as an easy dictionary and thesaurus).
4. Streamline Learning with Multi-Device Setups
In a multi-child homeschool, sharing devices can be tricky. But with a little planning, you can rotate tech time and use devices intentionally.
Tips for a tech-friendly homeschool setup:
- Designate specific devices for each child or subject if you're able to. We budgeted to purchase a computer for each of our kids, as they get a lot of use out of them. Check out my popular post on picking out a computer for your homeschool if you need some help here!
- Use old tablets for things like audiobooks or educational games (just install Family Link or Guided Access to limit distractions).
- Create home screen folders by subject so they're easy to find (e.g., “Math Apps,” “Reading Tools”).
💡 Pro tip: Set up a charging station so devices are always ready when you need them—and not dead when you finally get a moment of peace.
5. Curate Quality EdTech Tools and Subscriptions
One of the biggest time-wasters is clicking through endless websites or downloading too many apps. Simplify your choices by sticking with a few high-quality, tried and true tech tools, such as:
- Reading Eggs or Homer – for early reading skills
- Wordela – for vocabulary practice
- Duolingo – for foreign language practice
- Typesy – for keyboarding
- World Watch News – for current events from a Christian perspective
Try rotating subscriptions by quarter to avoid burnout (and keep your budget in check!).
6. Batch and Automate Your Own Tasks
Homeschool moms do a lot—teaching, managing the home, coordinating meals, and keeping everyone on schedule. It can be overwhelming, but tech can ease that mental load by helping you automate some of the daily to-dos.
For example, meal planning apps like Plan to Eat, Yummly, or AnyList can save your favorite recipes and automatically create grocery lists, even sorting items by store sections. You can set recurring meal plans, which means less thinking about what to cook each week.
For household management, the Home Routines app is my personal favorite; it lets you build daily and weekly cleaning checklists that reset automatically—perfect for keeping your home in order without re-creating lists over and over.
You can also automate things like bill payments, subscription renewals, or even set calendar reminders on your phone for things like library returns or homeschool group deadlines. The goal isn’t to add more tech—it’s to let the right tools handle the repetitive stuff so you can focus more on your family and your homeschool.
🧺 Homeschool hack: Fold laundry during read-alouds and use a wireless Bluetooth earpiece to play audiobooks through your phone while keeping your hands free.
7. Set Up Digital Routines for Kids
When kids know exactly what to expect, they’re more independent—and less likely to ask, “What’s next, Mom?” every five minutes.
I love how Homeschool Planet basically does this for me. When I set up our homeschool schedule, my kids automatically can see their daily routine when they log in to their accounts, and they know exactly what they need to get done that day.
Encouraging tech responsibility early on not only makes your homeschool day smoother but also prepares your kids with real-life skills they’ll use for years to come.
8. Keep Everything Synced and Backed Up
Tech is amazing—until it fails. Don’t lose hours of lesson plans or precious photos to a crash!
Easy backup systems:
- Google Drive / OneDrive / Dropbox for cloud storage
- External hard drive for offline backups
- Use automatic syncing tools (like Google Photos or iCloud) for saving homeschool memories
You can also use email folders or Google Docs to collect student work digitally throughout the year. Come homeschool portfolio season, everything’s ready to go!
9. Tech Hacks for Your Sanity, Not Just School
Tech isn't just for organizing your homeschool—it can bring peace to your life (which, in turn, probably helps out your homeschool, right?!).
Here are a few apps to check out:
- YouVersion Bible App: Start your day with a devotional or Scripture reading.
- Les Mills+ workouts: Squeeze in movement without leaving the house! This is my absolute favorite fitness app, and you can get a 30-day free trial HERE.
10. Remember: Use Tech as a Tool, Not a Taskmaster
Here’s the most important tip: Don’t let tech overwhelm you.
Not every tool will work for every mom. Sometimes you’ll try something that fizzles. That’s okay! The goal isn’t to do it all—it’s to use tools that give you back more time, more peace, and more presence in your day.
Ask yourself:
- Is this saving me time?
- Is it helping my kids learn or grow in responsibility?
- Is it reducing stress or adding to it?
If the answer is yes—awesome. If not, ditch it and try something else.
Final Thoughts: Try One or Two Tech Hacks This Week
You don’t need to overhaul your entire homeschool with tech overnight. Just pick one or two of these ideas and give them a try. See what works for your family—and build from there.
And remember, you're not alone. Thousands of homeschool moms are figuring out how to blend tech and learning in a way that works for their families, too.
