Typesy Homeschool Review: Why We Love It

I couldn't wait for my kids to want to learn how to type.

I have fond memories of using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing on our first computer when I was growing up, and I thought it was so much fun (does that show my age at all? 😂). I breezed through my typing classes in high school. So, naturally, I thought my kids would love it just as much, and, being the techie-family that we are, they'd pick up the skills quickly.

I chose a free online typing program, and my kids worked on it diligently throughout one of our school years. Sure, they grew kind of bored with it (it wasn't the most exciting program), but hey, it was FREE and seemed to be a full, solid curriculum.

They made it all the way through…spent hours on all of the lessons…

…and yet STILL could not type correctly 😭.

Wasting time with ineffective typing programs really caught up with us this past year. My kids are getting older and starting to complete more of their assignments on the computer, and I realized we weren’t as prepared as I thought.

I had assumed we had more time, but now I see how important it is to build strong keyboarding skills early—with a program that actually works. Whether they're writing essays, tackling online assignments, gaming, or even learning to code, typing is a skill they’ll use for life.

My search for a better typing solution led me to try Typesy Homeschool, and I’m so glad we did. We've been using it for about a month now, and I'm already impressed with the program and seeing some great progress in my kids. Could it be that I've found the best typing program for homeschoolers?

Time will continue to tell, but let me show you why we love it so far, and how it might be a perfect fit for your family, too.

What Is Typesy Homeschool?

Typesy Homeschool is a complete, standards-aligned keyboarding curriculum designed just for homeschoolers. It blends interactive touch typing activities, engaging video lessons, and fun games with real academic value.

Typesy stands out as the only typing program that uses immersive 3D animated stories to make learning exciting and fun. By incorporating modern game mechanics and encouraging healthy competition (with the Typesy Hall of Fame!), it keeps students motivated and actively engaged throughout the learning process.

But it’s more than just a typing game. Typesy teaches typing with purpose—focusing on muscle memory, language development, and computer literacy, while helping students work more efficiently and confidently in every subject.

Typing program for homeschoolers

It includes thousands of lessons (over 23,000!), and goes far beyond typing drills. There are built-in modules for digital citizenship, internet safety, spelling, vocabulary, computer skills, and even coding.

Why We Chose Typesy for Our Homeschool

Like I mentioned earlier, we’ve tried a handful of typing programs over the years, and while some were okay, they all lacked one thing or another—either they weren’t engaging, didn’t offer enough structure, or didn’t let me track progress. I wanted something that worked across multiple age levels, was easy for my kids to use independently, and still let me oversee their learning.

Typesy offered everything I was looking for:

  • Structured, self-paced curriculum
  • Easy-to-navigate dashboard
  • Multi-age support
  • No distracting ads
  • Powerful reporting tools for parents
  • Cross-device syncing

And best of all, my kids genuinely like using it. That’s saying something!

How Does Typesy Work?

Typesy is very easy to get started with.

Once you add your students, you can browse their HUGE selection of courses and assign either a keyboarding class, or, one of their other video courses (more on these in a minute!).

Your student will log in with their own personal log-in, click into the course (which shows up on their dashboard), and get started!

Typing Curriculum

It depends on the curriculum you choose, but many have short video lessons, followed by exercises and games to practice typing.

As students complete their lessons and play games, they earn “Typesy Points”. Earning points will allow them to progress to higher levels, which will unlock even more games, avatar features, and other fun content.

Kids in Kindergarten through 2nd grade will begin with Typesy Little Ones, a program that starts to teach typing with just using the index fingers to teach the f and j keys, and then slowly progresses them to other finger positions.

3rd-5th graders will begin with Typesy Kids, which offers even more typing drills and games. This program can be completed in about 6 weeks, with 30 minutes per day spent on typing.

Middle and High School learners will start with Typesy Interactive, which has even more content and is less “cartoony” than the younger kids' programs. This course can be completed in about 8 weeks, with 30 minutes a day dedicated to typing.

More advanced high schoolers (and even working professionals!) can even use Typesy Professional to learn or brush up on their skills. There's truly something for everyone at every level!

Special Features We're Loving

There are a lot of things I've learned Typesy offers as we've used the program that have surprised and impressed me.

Typesy rewards

My kids have been pretty easy to impress as well. Once they learned they could collect pets as they worked through their lessons, they were sold. My girls especially love to hatch them and collect them on their profile. And we learned that they can even equip these pets to give them special bonuses in the course!

They haven't quite made the Typesy Hall of Fame yet, but I can see how this would be a great motivator for some kids. Your kids can see their name on the list by earning enough points each week to make the top 50.

⭐ creating your own word lists to practice

I think this is so cool! I created a custom word list within Typesy using the vocabulary words my kids are studying. Not only can they practice typing these words, but Typesy actually creates flash cards and my kids can use this platform as a way to practice and study their vocabulary list as well.

You can easily plug in the exact words your kids are studying—whether it’s spelling, science, or maybe even Bible verses—and Typesy turns them into typing practice that actually reinforces what they’re already learning.

📲 Pro-tip: The ability to input my own text for my kids to type was kind of hard for me to find. You'll need to “create a new test or assignment” in your admin account to do this!

So instead of bouncing between separate spelling and typing lessons, you can blend the two! It’s not just efficient—it’s fun. And when kids enjoy what they’re doing, they remember more and make real progress.

⭐programs for all ages

I love how customized the different keyboarding lessons are for all ages. My youngest son couldn't wait to give it a try after seeing his older siblings doing their lessons. The videos, exercises and games were perfect for him!

What Makes Typesy the Best Homeschool Typing Curriculum?

In my opinion, here’s what really sets Typesy apart from other programs we’ve tried:

✅ Engaging + Effective

Kids don’t just mindlessly click through the lessons. They get video instruction, instant feedback, and rewards like avatar upgrades and “hatching pets”. The games (see below) reinforce learning while keeping them motivated.

My kids mentioned they really like how the lessons introduce new keys gradually while still reviewing what they’ve already learned. They feel like they get just the right amount of practice with each new skill before moving on, which helps them feel more confident as they go.

✅ Designed for Homeschoolers

Unlike other typing platforms built for classrooms, Typesy Homeschool gives YOU, the parent, full control. YOU decide what lessons your kids see, how fast they progress, and whether you want to assign custom lists or allow them to explore. You can also assign custom lessons and create assessments that grade automatically.

✅ PARENT SUPPORT

There are so many statistics and detailed reports available that update real-time as your kids complete their lessons. Or, if you just want a quick at-a-glance snapshot, the dashboard is clear and easy to understand.

✅ Literacy-Integrated Learning

I love that Typesy doesn’t treat typing as an isolated skill. It recognizes the strong connection between keyboarding and language development. By including tools like flash cards, spelling practice, and customizable word lists, Typesy Homeschool turns typing time into meaningful literacy practice too.

✅ Cross-Device + Cloud-Based

You can use Typesy on just about any device—Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Android, or iPad—and pick up right where you left off. It syncs instantly, so it’s great for families on the go or with shared devices.

More Than Just Typing

You guys, this is one more thing I was honestly so impressed with:

Typesy Homeschool also offers more than 17,000 standards-aligned lessons covering digital citizenship, computer skills, and more 😲.

Computer & Internet Classes

  • Kindergarten-2nd grade computer basics
  • Digital citizenship lessons for elementary
  • Microsoft Office tutorials and G-suite tutorials
  • Computer Operating Systems (for high school and beyond)

These are all video-based courses (self-paced); some do have comprehension questions and quizzes included. All can be completed in about 6-8 weeks with 30 minutes per day spent on the course.

Coding Classes

If your student is interested in coding, Typesy Teaches Coding is a great place to start. They offer a complete curriculum that walks them through everything from the basics of how coding works to the details of specific languages, tools, and frameworks.

Typesy also offers a Computational Thinking curriculum for grades 2–8, and it’s such a great addition—especially if you’re looking to build those problem-solving and critical thinking skills early on. It introduces kids to important concepts like breaking down problems, spotting patterns, and creating step-by-step solutions in a really approachable way. The lessons are interactive and engaging, and I love that they reinforce both digital literacy and typing fluency at the same time.

Career & Success Classes

  • Productivity & English vocabulary (3 months of content!)
  • Career Success—the most comprehensive course Typesy offers, with over 200 hours of learning time
  • Brain Training

(Did I mention that all of these classes do NOT cost extra — they're all included in your subscription??) 🤯
