Welcome to the #TechieHomeschool IRL blog series!  In this post, my guest Angela shares 10 of the best websites you can use as curriculum supplements in your homeschool.

Our world basically revolves around technology. Our kids spend enough time attached to their phones, iPads, computers and other flashy devices that when it comes to school learning time, I prefer a more minimalist approach.

But I'll admit that despite how comprehensive our curriculum is there are still topics that we would like to spend more time on and subjects that we would like to dig deeper into, and the internet is great at giving us the ability to do so.

I have put together these 10 great websites to supplement your curriculum if you find yourself wanting to dig a little deeper as well.

Time spent online doesn't have to be wasted; students can have fun while learning, doing research and adding to the already robust curriculums you have chosen for them. Here are 10 of the best websites you can use as curriculum supplements.

Websites to supplement your History Curriculum

The National Archives

Educators throw around the words “primary source” like they are confetti. For those that aren't aware, primary sources are first-hand accounts, original manuscripts, records, or documents produced from the time period at hand.

The National Archives are full of examples of primary sources. If you want to show your student pictures from the Great Depression or what the original Bill of Rights looked like, then this website is going to give you access to that.

History.com

History.com has an educator section that is categorized into sections like: This day in history, history topics, biographies, historical clips and more. It also includes a section with study guides that has fantastic lessons for your student to work through that includes more historical links and videos for each topic.

Websites to help you Teach Civics

Private i History Detectives  (K-5)

This website, founded by former Justice Sandra Day O'Conner, has lessons available to help you teach civics through an inquiry approach while using primary sources. Slide shows, videos and handouts accompany each lesson.

A few of the topics covered in the K-5th grades are: What makes a good leader? Communities, Why do we need maps? How does culture impact the way we live?

If you are looking for civics' information for the upper grades, they do have curriculum units available for 6th-12th grade.

Websites to Supplement your Science Curriculum

NASA STEM Engagement

NASA offers great learning opportunities for students with their fantastic STEM resources. You can click on whichever grade level you are most interested in, and it will pull up dozens of fun activities to choose from that include lessons and videos.

Ology

The American Museum of Natural History put together this fantastic science website for kids. Pick a topic of study and jump in to all the resources available. There are games, activities, videos and more. There is even an iPad app available to download.

Fun Reading Websites to Supplement your Curriculum

Roy the Zebra

Roy the zebra is a free resource that’s all about supporting emerging readers with their literacy skills. This site is home to an engaging range of reading, spelling, and punctuation games, as well as an stories, lesson plans, printable resources and even songs.

Read Write Think

This website is designed for the educator and not so much the student. Thousands of resources are available to help teachers with reading and English language arts lesson plans.

Download lessons, videos, books and worksheets to teach a wide variety of topics, broken up by grade level. There is a small section that gives you access to student interactives to go along with different subject areas.

Math Supplemental Websites

Math TV

Do you have a student who needs a little extra help when it comes to math? Math TV is here to help.

Pick the type of math you want help with, and videos and lesson examples will pop up to help walk you through different math concepts.

Math Playground

Math games abound on this website. Choose to sort by either grade level or math topic and let your student explore the many different games available to them to help reinforce each math concept.

Overall Great Learning Resource Website

The Smithsonian Learning Lab

This website has a little bit of everything! But what you will want to home in on is the millions of images, recordings, and texts. It is easy to find something of interest because search results display pictures rather than lists.

The website even allows you to personalize your time spent on your research by adding your own notes and tags and incorporating discussion questions.

Time spent online doesn't have to be wasted. Students can have fun while learning, doing research and adding to the already robust curriculums you have chosen for them.

As a side note, these websites, although kid friendly and vetted through most educational school systems and/or respectable organizations, doesn't mean that your student shouldn't be monitored while using them. Each family will have to choose for themselves what they consider appropriate for their student, taking into account maturity and age.
