Picture this: A young teenager with dreams of becoming a doctor, a scientist, or perhaps a teacher. The path seems clear, the vision unwavering.

But life, as we know, has its twists and turns. The journey to a fulfilling career isn't always a straight road, and sometimes, the unexpected takes us down avenues we never thought we'd explore.

I have first-hand experience with this. With a masters degree and almost a decade of teaching high school math under my belt, an opportunity arose for a direction I never saw my life taking: starting my own business.

This is the beauty of life's unpredictability, and it's why we're often told to be prepared for whatever lies ahead.

In a world that's constantly evolving, preparing our children for their futures requires more than just a narrow set of skills.

This is where entrepreneurship steps in. It's not merely about starting a business; it's about helping our kids create a mindset that equips them to be adaptable and resilient, able to create opportunities in any field they someday choose.

Fundamentals in Entrepreneurship is a new self-paced, online entrepreneurship class that will teach your kids practical skills in a fun, unique way.

Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship Course

One of the newest Mr. D Math courses is “Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship”, and I highly recommend it as an option for your 7th-12th grade homeschoolers!

I've dubbed this the “Bandpreneur” course, because students step into the shoes of a band owner and take a journey that mirrors the real world of business.

They learn to innovate, brand, manage finances, generate revenue, and navigate the complexities of business growth.

This class isn't just theory; it's a hands-on experience that cultivates practical skills, hones decision-making abilities, and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit.

Mr. D Math Online Class

I would have absolutely loved a class like this back in the day!  Through the self-paced lessons, your kids will learn and apply important skills that everyone should know before they begin and run their own business.

The instructor, Sean Crevier, is a longtime business, accounting, & finance educator, and presents information in a way that is easy to understand and implement.  Through the course, he'll take your kids through strategic lessons as they take on the role as owner of a band, and develop their entrepreneurial skills!

It's such a fun concept, and allows kids to work through the entire start-up process, learning transferable skills they can apply at any time to their own business ideas.

What Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship Covers

There are 6 modules in this course, which will take your child about 90 hours to complete over the course of the semester. It's recommended for grades 7 and up, so it's perfect for your high schooler to take to earn 1/2 credit.

Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship

Here's a brief look at what's covered in each module:

Module 1: Innovating the Startup — Students begin thinking like an entrepreneur almost immediately, learning how to think beyond boundaries and make choices that pave the way for innovation. They'll engage in the process of identifying, refining, and capitalizing on their interests, use creative problem-solving, and discover the power of trade-offs that will resonate with their target audience.

Through a hands-on experience as a band owner, they'll be immersed in decision-making that ignites the spark of entrepreneurship.

Module 2: Branding the Startup — Students learn the magic of branding and its pivotal role in establishing awareness and trust. They'll learn to create brand stories that resonate and leverage social media's potential, and also watch their band come to life with a name and logo that capture its essence.

Module 3: Funding the Startup — An important step for any entrepreneur! Students learn to navigate the intricacies of identifying capital needs and securing financial backing. From borrowing to bootstrapping, they'll gain insights into diverse funding avenues. They'll dive into the nitty-gritty of financial planning by calculating their band's sources and use of funds, setting the stage for a sustainable business venture.

Module 4: Status Check through Storytelling — This module revisits storytelling, but this time it's all about telling a businesses financial story. Students learn what the “Butterfly” is, and gain experience with accounting equations and balance sheets. They'll also learn about income statements and how to tell if a business is profitable.

Module 5: Building Value — In this module, students explore strategies to expand their brand's reach! They'll venture into the realm of product sales, moving beyond services to design and market tangible merchandise. I love that they are encouraged to create financial goals, and devise a roadmap to increase profits and establish enduring market presence.

Module 6: Now What? — In the final section of the course, students find themselves at the crossroads of business growth and transition, from cultivating a sustainable enterprise to considering the prospect of selling. They'll explore the nuances of determining business value, a pivotal step for those contemplating a new chapter. This module will equip them with the ability to navigate the destiny of their business with clarity and confidence.

My Experience

While my kids are just slightly too young for this course, I was able to take an inside peek to explore the lessons, activities, and get a good feel for what it's like.

Immediately I could sense the instructor's passion for teaching this subject. He encourages students that they are entrepreneurs, and that learning involves doing. What they put into the course, they will get out of it. He offers some great tips for getting into a consistent routine of taking an online, self-paced course that are really helpful.

I'll admit, at first I was a little hesitant about the band concept; I didn't think it would be my favorite idea to work through and wasn't sure what to expect.

However, the course isn't really about actually creating a band — but learning about all aspects of business (from innovation to branding, funding, and beyond) through this concept.

If you don't think your kids would like the “band” idea, don't let this hold you back! They will learn so many skills through these lessons that they can take and apply to their own business concepts someday.

And honestly, if you've got entrepreneurial kids that have a business venture they want to begin NOW, they could easily complete this course with that idea in mind (instead of the thought of a band). For example, they can use the activities from the course in Module 2 to create a slogan and logo for their own business.

This course is very interactive and engaging, using videos, external relevant links, and printable worksheets. There are quizzes after each lesson which are graded by the computer, and help ensure kids are paying attention during the lessons.

I will add that one caveat to the quizzes is that you are given the answers at the end, and your child can go back and re-take them (they are allowed 2 submissions). This is great if they sincerely want to improve on their grade, but they could also take advantage of this.

Entrepreneurship class

Each lesson would take about an hour or so to complete; there is no pacing guide as students can work through at their own rate, so you might choose to create a plan or calendar for them to use if they need it to stay on track.

My overall view is that Mr. D Math Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship gives a great look at the process and mindset of entrepreneurship, important concepts business owners need to be thinking about, and the how to put these things into practice.

The decision-making and problem-solving aspects of the course will challenge students and simulate real entrepreneurial challenges…great real-world skills and prep for the future job market!
