Getting Started with Homeschool Tech: 5 Basic Things You Need to Know

Welcome to the #TechieHomeschool IRL blog series! In this post, my guest Holly shares key things to keep in mind as you begin to add more homeschool tech to your routine.
When I first started homeschooling my 6 kiddos about 20 years ago, there were only a handful of curriculum options available and even fewer that utilized technology in their delivery. I think we had the option to use Abeka DVDs or Switched on Schoolhouse maybe? There were also a few other educational games and such, but for the most part there was not much diversity in the homeschooling technology world.
Fast forward to 2022 and it is a whole different world with so many options that it can actually be overwhelming and very confusing at times to know which tech to use in your homeschooling. With the rise of technology, homeschoolers are turning to digital resources as a way to supplement their lesson plans and create an engaging educational experience for students.
Most homeschoolers these days use some type of technology in their schooling whether it is online printables, online classes, or homeschooling curriculum online. With that said, there are still quite a few hold-outs who have not quite embraced the use of tech in homeschooling.
If that is you, and you’re considering getting started with homeschool and tech, here are a few tips that can help ensure you get off on the right foot.
#1: Do Your Research
Before investing in any type of technology for your homeschool setting, it pays to take time and do research first.
Read reviews by other parents who have used the tools or apps you are interested in and makes sure they check all the boxes for what you need. Look into online courses from accredited institutions that offer study materials specifically geared toward homeschoolers, and make sure you understand both the pros and cons associated with introducing tech into your curriculum before making any commitments.
Everyone claims they have the best online option, but the true BEST option is the one that works best for your family.
#2: Appropriate Safeguards
Incorporating technology into your homeschool brings a unique set of cyber security risks that must be addressed if kids are going to be using devices inside or outside of their home classroom environment.
Set up appropriate security measures like limiting internet access to only age-appropriate websites, installing antivirus software on computers, and making sure all passwords are up-to-date so that your students can be protected from potential external threats while doing school work online!

#3: Establish Boundaries
It’s also important to set boundaries around how much time your child spends playing educational video games or browsing the web while doing homework – as too much reliance on search engines or automated systems instead of independent research could potentially hinder development down the line if not addressed correctly.
TEACH your kiddos not to click on anything they are not 100% sure about, and to stay within the program they are using. Also, teach them to NEVER give out any personal information online to anyone, ever, without talking to you first.
Make sure you explain these rules clearly when introducing them so that everyone is on the same page when it comes to using technology responsibly in the home classroom!
#4: Take Advantage Of Automation
With helpful software solutions like online homeschool planners, gradebooks or class organization apps, homeschoolers can now take advantage of automated systems for keeping track of grades and assignments – allowing them to stay ahead of deadlines without taking up too much extra time!
#5: Maintain A Healthy Balance
Finally, don't forget about integrating offline activities into your lesson plan too! While digital resources may add a lot of value towards growth in knowledge and skills development it should not replace traditional teaching methods such as hands-on instruction or offline research projects altogether – especially during younger years where social interaction with family members is essential for positive development .
Balance out their time spent between virtual lessons with physical activities such as sports or playing board games outside with friends whenever possible!
Integrating technology into your home education has many potential benefits, but it’s important that parents take time upfront to ensure they have taken all necessary steps in order to guarantee their students have an optimum learning experience with minimal risk involved. With careful planning you can then enjoy all the wonderful possibilities that technology brings!
