Easy Homeschool Record Keeping: A Homeschool Records Review

The other day my friend and I were chatting, and the topic of homeschool transcripts came up. I asked her what she was going to use to keep track of all her homeschool high school records and create a transcript; she told me she wasn’t going to use any software or anything, but that she would just compile everything herself.
If you’re anything like me, you get a little anxious just thinking about this.
Not that it’s difficult, per say, and I have no doubt she will do a beautiful job organizing everything.

For example, from an early age I’ve needed to log my kids’ homeschool hours and keep a portfolio of their work to satisfy our legal requirements. Tracking attendance or submitting report cards isn’t something I’ve had to worry about.
But high school is right around the corner for us, and I know that keeping accurate and comprehensive records for our homeschool will be important.
It’s not just about staying organized (although I do love to be organized); it’s about ensuring my kids have all the documentation they’ll need for their future endeavors.
Colleges, scholarship committees, and even some employers require detailed transcripts, proof of volunteer work, and comprehensive records of academic achievements.

You really want this to look professional and include all the necessary information. Using a service like Homeschool Records helps calm my fears that I’ll leave something out!
Homeschool Records allows you to easily input grades and credit information to include on your transcript, and ensures everything is formatted correctly to meet any necessary requirements. I love the pre-populated course names and categories to choose from—this makes the process even easier!
There are even 4 different options to choose from for your transcript report, so you have a lot of control over what data you want to show.

Another feature I really appreciate is the course descriptions option.
Course descriptions are sometimes required for college applications…from what I understand, not always, BUT, I want to make sure I have them if needed.
Having a space to write a concise yet comprehensive overview of what we’ve studied each year in our homeschool is really helpful. The self-guided interface allows you to provide descriptions for each course you add, including the curriculum used, topics covered, and any major projects or assignments.
You can even print out a nice page of all your course descriptions in case you need a detailed curriculum report for the year.
Professional Reports
Speaking of reports, Homeschool Records also allows you to record and create reports for attendance, hours of instruction, reading logs, and community service.
The student resume gives you a place to record awards or special recognitions, extracurricular activities, work experience, and more.
There are so many details you can add to each section on the dashboard (such as the number of pages in the books, or the ISBN numbers!). You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into this.

Degree Plan Feature
I was excited to see the Degree Plan option in the dashboard, and was expecting to find a way for me to plan out the courses my kids would be taking during high school.
That’s pretty much what this is, however, it’s strictly formatted for those who are a part of Classical Conversations, so I didn’t have much use for this part.
However, if you’re a member of Classical Conversations, it seems pretty handy! You can drag and drop from a selection of classes to make a plan for student, and then you can even input the grade your child receives for those classes when they’ve completed the course.

I think the value is very fair; I’ve seen cheaper options that don’t have as many features, along with much pricer applications for managing your record-keeping.
Overall, I think Homeschool Records offers exceptional value for its price, providing a user-friendly platform that supports homeschool families in managing and documenting their children’s educational journey effectively.
Considerations
There are only a couple of things to keep in mind as you are searching for homeschool record-keeping software.
Homeschool Records creates beautiful reports and does help you keep track of many important things for your homeschool. One thing I wish it did have was a grade book, so I could keep track of grades in each of our high school courses. Maybe this will be a future feature, but at the time of review there is no grade calculation or gradebook capabilities.
The only other thing I wish I could do is keep records at a younger age. I have to start logging educational hours when my kids are 7 years old, and I unfortunately can’t do that easily with Homeschool Records. If you are homeschooling in a state that requires you to distinguish between core and non-core hours as well, this won’t quite do the trick.
If you don’t need an online homeschool planner or a gradebook option, Homeschool Records might be a perfect fit.
