Five ways to use Canva to teach graphic design.

What is Canva?

Canva is a graphic design platform used to create social media graphics, presentations, posters, documents, and other visual content. The app includes templates for users to use and can be used on desktops, cell phones, and iPads. The platform is free to use and offers paid subscriptions like Canva Pro and Canva for Enterprise, which provide more functions.

Canva also uses a drag and drop feature which makes creation much easier. There are many functions that work together to help its users create the design they are looking for. It is user-friendly, making it the number one platform I suggest for kids who want to have a go at graphic design.

5 Ways to Use Canva to Teach Graphic Design in Your Homeschool

Basics of Graphic Design

With this platform being designed the way it is, it provides a stress-free way for introducing your kids to the basics of graphic design. They'll be able to see and locate templates, elements, text, and other features. Your kids won't have to know fancy tech words but can easily learn them as they navigate the Canva platform. Everything is clearly labeled and stationed in quick-access folders with labels.

Typography

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. When kids learn how to use Canva, they are able to experiment with different typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing, and letter-spacing, and adjusting the space between pairs of letters.

Colors & Images

Canva is filled with millions of colors and thousands of images all just a click away. Kids will have the opportunity to play around with different color palettes, create vibrant graphics with just about any image you can think of. Through the built-in search tool, kids can search anything from cars to outer space and have a wealth of selections to choose from.

Composition & Layouts

These two components are often the meat and potatoes of graphic design. Being able to create layouts and compose them in a way that is eye-catching is often what sets a graphic designer apart from the next. Through these attributes, kids can really tap into their creative style and begin putting things together that were once thoughts in their minds.

Careers in the Field

By adding Canva as a way to teach graphic design in your homeschool, your kids can begin to explore different career paths. Although this is a broad niche, the various aspects of it could show kids that there are smaller things that could be done within the field itself. They may discover that they enjoy creating logos better than anything else or that they prefer to design infographics. By experimenting with a platform like Canva, it can help them narrow down their graphic design career path.
