I don't know about you, but when I was in high school, I rarely gave my transcript a second thought. Sure, I strove for good grades and knew I needed to earn all of my “credits”. I knew that this was a document that my prospective college advisors would use to evaluate me. But I don't think I ever really even glanced at my official transcript.

What Should Be Included in a Homeschool Transcript?

So as you can see, a homeschool transcript is truly not just a piece of paper. It's also not just a list of courses and grades; you want to try to provide a comprehensive overview of your child's educational journey.

To ensure your transcript is effective and meets the expectations of colleges and scholarship committees, the following information should be included:

1. Student Information

Full Name & Contact Information: Your child's full name and address should be prominently displayed at the top of your student's transcript. Optionally, include your child's phone number and email address for correspondence.

2. Course Names (Sectioned by School Year/Grade Level)

Course Titles: For each school year, list the names of all courses your high school student has completed or is currently enrolled in.

Be specific with the titles of your courses, which helps colleges and scholarship committees understand the content and/or rigor of your child's education.

3. Credit Hours, Grades and GPA:

High School Credits: Each course your child takes will most likely be worth either 1 high school credit or 0.5 credits (this will be pre-determined by curriculum you purchase, or by the number of hours completed if you put together your own high school courses). Document the credits earned next to each course taken, then note the total number of credits acquired each year of high school and cumulatively.

Letter Grade: You'll assign a final grade for each course, preferably on a standardized grading scale (e.g., A, B, C, D, F). Document this in a column next to the credits earned, then convert to a numerical scale (e.g., 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0) to help with calculating your child's GPA.

Grade Point Average (GPA): For each year, you'll calculate and display your student's GPA, and then you'll want to also report the cumulative GPA on the transcript. This summarizes your child's overall academic performance, and colleges often use this as an initial screening tool.

4. Standardized Test Scores (If Applicable)

Include scores from standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, or any relevant subject-specific tests. These scores can provide additional context for your child's academic abilities.

5. Extracurricular Activities

Highlight any extra-curricular activities, job experience, clubs, or organizations your child has been involved in during their homeschooling years. This demonstrates a well-rounded education and showcases their interests and skills outside of academics.

6. Graduation Date and Requirements

Indicate your child's anticipated or actual graduation date.

You'll also want to specify any additional graduation requirements met, such as community service hours, portfolios, or capstone projects.

7. Accreditation and Affiliation (Optional)

If your homeschool program is affiliated with a recognized institution or follows an accredited curriculum, you can mention this on your transcript.

8. Signature and Contact Information

Include your signature as the homeschool educator (administrator). You might also provide your contact information in case colleges or scholarship committees need to verify any information.

Homeschooling typically involves diverse learning experiences, from parent-created high school classes to independent research projects.

Keeping meticulous records of all coursework, credit hours, grades, and activities can be time-consuming and challenging during the high school years (even more so if you've got multiple teenagers!), so you'll want to have a system in place for keeping track of all this.

GPA Calculations

Calculating a Grade Point Average (GPA) might be an initial hurdle, but I'm confident you can figure this out! A quick Google search will help you out, or your online homeschool planner will typically do this for you if you're using the gradebook features.

Formatting and Organization

Creating a professional-looking transcript with nice formatting and organization can be daunting. You'll want to make sure it's not disorganized or poorly formatted transcript, so that it leaves a good impression on colleges or scholarship committees.

Balancing Academics and Extracurriculars

Homeschool students often engage in a wide range of extracurricular activities, which can be challenging to document effectively alongside academic achievements.

Time and Effort
