What Intrigued Me About Mas Spanish

Mas Spanish looked different to me right off the bat. Lessons have been developed and taught by Katie Beville, who has been a Spanish instructor for 20+ years. It's clear she loves what she does — her enthusiasm stood out to me as we began our trial classes!

Many online Spanish courses I'm familiar with are taught live to small classes of students, but Mas Spanish is a curriculum built on self-paced video lessons.

It's like your child has their own private Spanish tutor…but for MUCH cheaper!

Plus, having the lessons recorded is super helpful as they can go back and re-watch lessons as needed.

And as my daughter worked through her lessons, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the lessons were highly interactive and multi-sensory.

There were the actual video lessons she watched, but she also had worksheets to fill in, internet tools to use, projects to complete, and even engaging games to play to practice what she was learning.

Possibly the best part was that I didn't have to know or teach Spanish for my daughter to use this course!

What the Spanish 1 Homeschool Course Includes

At the time of writing this review. Spanish 1 is the only course available, however, Spanish 2 is coming soon.

When you purchase Spanish 1, you receive:

  • 12 guided units (roughly 10 lessons per unit)
  • Engaging teaching videos, printable worksheets & activities
  • Exclusive Mas Spanish online games
  • 2-year access

You do not receive any physical materials when you purchase Mas Spanish; there ARE worksheets, but you will need to print those out yourself, or complete them on your computer or tablet.

Overview of the Spanish 1 Homeschool Lessons

Throughout the 12 lessons, your kids will learn the following concepts:

  • Spanish alphabet and basic conversation
  • Spanish numbers
  • Days, Months, Years
  • Basic grammar & sentence structure
  • Verb conjugation, present tense and irregular verbs
  • Vocabulary for emotions, family, verbs, foods, clothing, sports, body, and animals

The Units all follow a similar format, which is nice because we knew what to expect going into each lesson.

Typically, the unit begins with a video presentation, followed by a worksheet we would print off and complete.

I loved the fact that Katie then reviews the entire worksheet with the students in the next lesson…so I didn't even have to do any grading or checking!

This puts responsibility on the kids to check their work and if they missed something on the worksheet, they have an explanation of the correct answers to help them.

There are about two video presentations per unit (followed by the worksheet and then the answer key/review).

At the very end of the unit, you'll find links to relevant YouTube videos of songs that help students remember what they learned (this is sooo helpful when learning a new language!).

And finally, all units end with online games to reinforce concepts. The games were actually really fun and approved by my video-game-loving daughter — she didn't want to stop using them!

What I Love Most About Mas Spanish for Homeschoolers

As we worked through the first unit of this curriculum, there were definitely things that stood out to me that set Mas Spanish apart. Here's why I recommend it as an option for homeschooling families looking for an effective Spanish curriculum.

Accessibility and Flexibility

Navigating through Mas Spanish was seamless, as it has a very user-friendly interface. Each lesson is numbered, so my daughter could easily tell which lesson she needed to complete next (and they were “checked” off as she completed them).

Mas Spanish Homeschool Curriculum

With this being an online curriculum, as you techie homeschoolers know and love, it's very accessible. Meaning, wherever you go — as long as you have an internet connection — you can access your lessons.

No textbooks to take up space or misplace, and no worrying about missing out on lessons while traveling if you need or want to keep up with them on the go. It's such a great solution for busy homeschooling families seeking flexibility and convenience in a foreign language curriculum.

Comprehensive Learning Resources

Mas Spanish goes above and beyond with the resources included. In my opinion, there's something for every type of learner.

The video lessons provide the Spanish instruction, and as I mentioned earlier, Katie is a pleasure to learn from! Her lessons are not only informative but also engaging, which keeps kids active in the learning process.

In addition to the video lessons, there are a variety of supplementary materials to reinforce concepts and comprehension. Whether your kids learn best from worksheets, completing projects, doing internet research, or from listening to songs to help them memorize Spanish words, there's something for every type of learner.

My daughter's favorite part though was probably the interactive video games, which she was excited to discover!

By providing these different types of resources, Katie has ensured that through Mas Spanish, every child can find a method of learning that resonates with them.

Low Parental Involvement and Expertise

If you're looking for a homeschool Spanish curriculum that has minimal parent involvement (while maximizing student autonomy), Mas Spanish offers the hands-off approach you might need.

You don't have to be proficient in Spanish for your kids to excel in this course.

Answer keys are available for the worksheets, which eliminates the need for you to spend time checking and correcting your child's work.

Additionally, the course goes the extra mile by offering guided walkthroughs of the answers, ensuring kids not only complete their assignments but also understand the concepts behind them.

Of course, you'll still want to check in with your kids and make sure they are able to complete the work successfully. But these features will empower your kids AND you as they take responsibility for their learning and you rest assured knowing they are receiving a high-quality Spanish education.

Economic Value

I consider Mas Spanish to be pretty reasonable price-wise for an online curriculum. At $135 per student, it's definitely cheaper than other options that I've seen cost $20-$30 a class, or a couple hundred per year.

For what it includes, I absolutely think it's valuable and worth the investment.

There are a few free lessons available that you can test-drive yourself to get a great feel for what the curriculum offers. And through April 2024 you can save 25% with the coupon code Spring25.

What I Didn't Like

There wasn't much I didn't like as we explored the curriculum, but I have to be honest about a couple of things I would have liked to see included.

I like a schedule. Although yes, this is very easy to navigate, I would love to have a suggested pacing schedule that laid out which lessons to do and when. Not a deal-breaker though, and obviously something someone can figure out and plan on their own once they get a feel for the pacing of the curriculum.

I also wish there were a few tests and quizzes along the way, however, I do understand the instructor's desire for their “testing” to really be in interacting and practicing with native speakers.

Finally, I will say that my daughter is 10 years old and although navigating the course and using the materials was completely fine for her, there was quite a bit of note-taking involved as she watched the lessons (I suppose this was optional, but notes were handy for her as she worked on the worksheets or just wanted to review). It would be helpful if there were guided notes accessible, or even a summary page of the lessons and concepts being taught to reference. Again, not a deal breaker and you DO kind of have this once you complete the worksheets and projects.

Overall, I was very pleased with what I saw of the course and think this is a solid option for homeschooling families looking to add Spanish classes to their line-up!
