About Brighterly Math

Brighterly Math is an online math platform geared for kids in grades 1-8. They are different from a regular school and many other typical curriculums because their lessons are interactive, using a variety of games, videos, and activities to teach math concepts and make it enjoyable (and even entertaining!) for kids.

As a former math teacher myself, I really appreciate their viewpoint that all kids learn math at different rates, and with a proper approach, every child can find success in math. They put a big emphasis on going beyond memorization and making math more than just abstract equations by helping kids see the “real-life” value.

Professional, experienced tutors give personalized 1-1 instruction, and the feedback you receive will give you peace of mind that your child's math needs are being met.

What We Loved About Brighterly Math

We tried out a free demo class from Brighterly Math to see what it was all about. The demo class is a 45-minute session that gives you a feel for the experience your kids will have in their courses.

Great Flexibility

You can sign up for this free class 2 days in advance, so you'll want to make sure you've got about an hour of time in the next couple of days you can block out when you plan to sign up.

We actually scheduled our free class for a Saturday, because our schedule is so crazy – I was surprised to see the variety of time options available. 9-5 does not apply with Brighterly Math, so you have many options to take their classes at a time that's convenient for you.

Interactive Lessons That Were NOT Boring

When my daughter tells me she wishes she could do another math class, I know we've stumbled onto something unique.

We had received an email reminder both 30 minutes and 5 minutes prior to start of class, which was helpful; getting logged in was as easy as clicking a link.

Teacher Christina was enthusiastic and welcoming from the get-go as we got settled in for the lesson. Brighterly Math classes are taught on Nearpod, which is similar to Zoom but allows for much more gamification and interaction within the lessons. We got straight into learning!

Being able to draw, write, and move manipulatives around on the screen on our end was a big benefit! It kept my daughter's attention because she couldn't just sit passively and listen to a lesson – she had to interact, and she had a teacher focused solely on her and how she was understanding the material.

During the lesson, I noticed my daughter was asked multiple times to explain her reasoning and thinking. For one example, while reviewing prior knowledge, she was asked what a fraction is; the teacher drew on the screen what my daughter conveyed to her. I really appreciated this, as it's so important to be able to do.

While learning a new concept for her (simplifying fractions), my daughter was encouraged and never made to feel slow or “not good at math”. They simply worked on it and tried different approaches until it started to click. It was neat to see the pieces come together for her during the class!

When I was discussing the class afterwards with my daughter, she told me “I'm glad I said yes to trying this class!”. A win in my book!

Expert Teachers

The 1-1 attention was really impactful, because the teacher could tell immediately if my daughter was struggling with some information or if they could move forward. My daughter could ask questions if she needed help. The teacher always checked for understanding and gave positive reinforcement and helpful corrections.

Brighterly Math only hires a small percentage of applicants, as they want to ensure they have high quality teachers with years of experience, who can teach according to the company's core values and mission.

Placement Test

At the end of our free class, my daughter took a short placement test so the teacher could better asses her math skills, pinpoint possible weaknesses, and help develop the best plan for future classes.

About 30 minutes after our class, I received a call from a Brighterly Math parent advisor – I was honestly surprised, because I'd never received a follow-up call after an online class! He wanted genuine feedback, and explained that my daughter's evaluation would be emailed to me to review. If we wanted to continue with any math courses in the future, lessons would be tailored to just what my daughter needed.

Brighterly Math in Your Homeschool

You might consider Brighterly Math in your homeschool for a variety of reasons. Some homeschoolers are using Brighterly Math for their main curriculum, others may just take an extra class or two a week to fill in gaps or for tutoring.

There are a few different choices you have in terms of lesson packages, ranging from about $28-$34 per lesson. If you visit their website, you'll also find lots of free PDF Math worksheets you can print out to use with your kids in your homeschool (even if you aren't on a plan).

The free class is worth a try to see what you think (and what your kids think!). To schedule your free trial lesson, you parent need to register on their website brighterly.com, and choose the date and time (remember that you can register 2 days in advance).

Final Thoughts About Brighterly Math

We truly enjoyed our Brighterly Math free trial class. We won't be implementing it as a full curriculum, because I have already purchased one this year that is going fairly smoothly. However, I was really impressed with our teacher and the quality of the lesson, as well as the placement test reporting and detailed plan.

If your child responds really well to interactive, gamified lessons, this might be a great fit for you. And if there is a math concept that your child just can't seem to grasp, a few tutoring sessions from Brighterly Math would surely help.
