Benefit of Online Spelling Games

One of the key advantages of online spelling games is their adaptability to individual students' needs. They often provide personalized learning experiences, with adjustable difficulty levels so students can challenge themselves and monitor their improvement over time.

Also, online spelling games offer a valuable opportunity for kids to practice spelling in a contextually relevant manner. Many platforms offer word lists categorized by themes or subjects, enabling them to reinforce their spelling skills while expanding their vocabulary in specific areas of interest. This helps kids apply their spelling knowledge to real-life situations, fostering a deeper understanding and retention of the words they encounter.

Finally, online spelling games are very accessible. With internet access and a compatible digital device, your kids can engage in spelling practice anytime and anywhere, leading to consistent and flexible learning opportunities.

Best Spelling Games Online

Let's explore some of the best options that will help your kids become better at spelling, and help you find a fun spelling game to add to your homeschool line-up.

Home Spelling Words Free Online Games

Home Spelling Words has developed an abundance of similar games, spelling tests, and spelling worksheets that are an excellent choice for your young learners – it's a great resource for your spelling needs!  Your kids can play memory games, a word scramble game, word search, and more, using the pre-made spelling lists available (for students of all ages).  You also have the option to import your own list of words, but these will not save unless you register with a paid account.

If you register for a paid account (at a very reasonable price, in my opinion), you are able to save your progress, grades, and your own spelling lists.

Here are a few of my favorite spelling games you can access with the free version of this website:

Crazy Fish – As kids play Crazy Fish, they will be trying to eat all the surfboards with the correctly spelled words on them. They must avoid those with misspelled words to get the highest score.

Memory Games – You can choose from a variety of different grade-level spelling lists for children to play this memory game, which will help kids match and find the correct spelling words.

King Cactus – Made in the style of a hangman game, King Cactus uses your own spelling words or a premade spelling list to help kids learn new words and how to spell them.

Mouse Maze – Each time the mouse reaches a piece of cheese as he goes through the maze, a word from the spelling list is said out load. This game will have them practicing their spelling words while getting the mouse to the end of the maze.

Word Scramble – Word Scramble will have kids putting the letters in order to spell a word. Kids can play the game until they go through the entire word list.

Spelling Training

With Spelling Training, you can enter a list of words you would like your kids to learn, and they can practice through a variety of different ways, including games.  I've had my kids use this website as an online spelling test with my own lists I enter.

Mr. Nussbaum

Mr. Nussbaum also offers a wide variety of games and educational resources for kids.  You can filter by grade level and activity type, and there are a few games where you can use your own lists.  Here are a couple of popular spelling games offered:

Spellerz – Spellerz is a customizable online spelling and typing game. As kids practice their spelling and typing, they will be helping save the world from invading “spellerz”.

You can choose from 11 word lists (including commonly misspelled words from 1st through 7th grade), or “create an invasion” by typing in your own words.  An easy, fun way to practice correct spellings of common words.

Torture the Teacher – Not as bad as it sounds! This is a game where children must pick the incorrect spelling of a word to drive the teacher crazy.

Turtle Diary

Turtle Diary offers over a thousand interactive educational games for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade.  Here are a couple of fun options they offer for word games that can help younger children improve their spelling:

Spellathon – Spellathon is a fun game where kids will be trying to make as many words as they can from the letters that they are given. Each round comes with three different levels of difficulty.

Spelling Words – Designed for kids, this game will help kids learn new words in a quick and easy manner. They will have to spell the words and memorize them to win the game.

Word Scrabble – A spelling game that’s a little more for advanced spellers, Word Scrabble will make spelling fun and challenging.

Loony Learn Spelling

A great option for young readers to play as they learn to spell, Loony Learn Spelling has different lessons to help them learn a variety of different words. You can choose from kindergarten to upper elementary grade levels.

Word Wipe

This simple game reminds me of Boggle; kids will be picking out the available words they can find in the jumble of letters to see how many they can spell.

Spelling Bee

An online spelling bee game kids will love playing. You can choose from easy or hard words and then let the kids see who can spell each word.
